Terms of Service

The short version
Stroki is a dictation app for Mac, iPhone, and iPad, made by Nous Labs LLC. The free tier is free forever. Pro is a subscription that unlocks the highest-accuracy engines, Recaps, and unlimited dictation.
Transcription runs entirely on your device. We never receive your audio or your transcripts, which means we also cannot recover them for you. We store account and subscription data, and the Mac app sends a health check-in, as described in the Privacy Policy.
You can cancel Pro at any time and keep using the free tier. Where you cancel and who refunds you depends on where you bought it — Apple handles both for App Store purchases, and we handle both for purchases made on our website.
The sections below are the full agreement. We've kept them in plain English rather than dressing them up.
Who you're agreeing with
Stroki is operated by Nous Labs LLC, a New York limited liability company ("Nous Labs", "we", "us"). By downloading, installing, or using Stroki, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use the app.
If you're using Stroki on behalf of a company, you're confirming you have authority to accept these terms for that company.
Eligibility
You need to be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, to buy a Pro subscription. The free tier has no age requirement beyond what Apple imposes through the App Store and macOS.
Stroki is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly provide accounts to anyone under 13.
Your licence to use Stroki
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and use Stroki on Apple-branded devices you own or control, for personal or business use. We're licensing the software to you, not selling it — Nous Labs retains all rights in Stroki itself.
You agree not to:
- Redistribute, resell, sublicense, or rent the app.
- Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive the source code, except where that restriction is unenforceable by law.
- Remove or obscure any copyright or attribution notices.
- Circumvent the licensing checks that separate the free tier from Pro, or share credentials to give others Pro access.
- Use Stroki to break the law, or to record anyone in circumstances where doing so would be unlawful where you are.
That last point deserves emphasis. Recording laws differ by state and country, and some require every participant's consent. Stroki gives you the tool; complying with the law where you live is on you.
If you downloaded Stroki from the App Store
Apple requires that we spell the following out, and it is worth knowing regardless:
- This agreement is between you and Nous Labs only, not with Apple. We — not Apple — are solely responsible for Stroki and its content.
- Your licence to use Stroki on iPhone or iPad is limited to use on Apple-branded products that you own or control, as permitted by the Usage Rules in the App Store Terms of Service, except that Stroki may also be accessed by other accounts associated with you through Family Sharing or volume purchasing.
- Nous Labs is solely responsible for providing any maintenance and support for Stroki. Apple has no obligation to provide any maintenance or support services for it.
- Nous Labs is solely responsible for any product warranties, whether express or implied by law, to the extent they are not effectively disclaimed. If Stroki fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple, and Apple will refund the purchase price of the app to you. To the maximum extent permitted by law, Apple has no other warranty obligation whatsoever with respect to Stroki.
- Nous Labs, not Apple, is responsible for addressing any claim relating to Stroki, including product liability claims, any claim that Stroki fails to conform to a legal or regulatory requirement, and any claim arising under consumer protection, privacy, or similar legislation.
- Nous Labs, not Apple, is responsible for the investigation, defence, settlement, and discharge of any third-party claim that Stroki infringes that party's intellectual property rights.
- You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a US Government embargo, or designated by the US Government as a "terrorist supporting" country, and that you are not listed on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
- Apple and Apple's subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement, and upon your acceptance of these terms, Apple has the right (and is deemed to have accepted the right) to enforce this agreement against you as a third-party beneficiary of it.
Your accounts and your content
On iPhone and iPad, a Stroki account is required to use the app, because your trial and your subscription are attached to the account rather than to the device. On Mac you need a Stroki account to finish setup and to use a Pro subscription. Dictation still happens on your Mac; we still never receive audio or transcripts.
By creating an account you agree to these Terms and the Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy describes the health check-in and optional usage data. This is not a second analytics product and is not a licence to upload speech.
You own everything you produce with Stroki — your transcripts, recordings, summaries, and vocabulary. We claim no rights over any of it, and we never receive it. It lives on your device.
The flip side: your data existing only on your device means we cannot restore it. If you lose your machine, delete the app, or delete the files, they're gone. Keep backups of anything that matters.
You're responsible for keeping your account credentials secure and for activity under your account.
Free trial
Creating a Stroki account starts a 14-day trial of Pro. It requires no card, and it converts to nothing — when it ends, Stroki simply drops to the free tier until you choose to subscribe.
The trial is attached to your account, not to your device or to a particular platform. It runs once. Reinstalling the app, switching Macs, or signing in on a new iPhone does not start it again.
What the free tier includes
The free tier is a real product, not a lockout, but it is not identical across platforms and the limits can change as the app evolves. The current limits are always shown in the app.
On Mac, the free tier includes unlimited dictation, your vocabulary, your full history, and usage stats. On iPhone and iPad, the free tier includes a weekly allowance of dictation time and a weekly allowance of Recaps and AI summaries, which reset every week.
Pro removes those allowances and unlocks the highest-accuracy engines and the full Recaps feature set on both platforms.
Pro subscriptions and billing
Pro is offered on two billing periods: $6.99 per month, or $75 per year. Prices may differ on the App Store, where Apple sets the local price tiers. The price shown to you at the moment of purchase is the price you pay.
One subscription covers you on every platform. Buy Pro on your iPhone and it unlocks on your Mac, and the other way round — that is what the account is for.
Purchases made in the iPhone or iPad app are processed by Apple and billed to your Apple Account. Subscriptions renew automatically unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period. You can manage the subscription and turn off auto-renew in your Apple Account settings at any time after purchase.
Purchases made through our website are processed by RevenueCat and Stripe, and renew automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price for your plan until you cancel. We'll tell you in advance by email if the price of an existing web subscription is ever going to change, and you'll be able to cancel before it takes effect.
We never see or store your full card details on either route. Applicable sales tax or VAT may be added at checkout depending on where you are.
If a web payment fails, we'll keep Pro active for a short grace period while your card issuer retries. If it keeps failing, Pro access ends and your account reverts to the free tier. Failed App Store payments are handled by Apple under its own rules.
Cancelling and refunds
Cancelling stops the next renewal. It does not cut you off on the spot — you keep Pro until the end of the period you've already paid for, and then Stroki reverts to the free tier. Nothing you've created is deleted.
If you subscribed on iPhone or iPad, cancel through your Apple Account subscription settings; the app's Manage subscription button takes you straight there. Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple under its own refund policy, not by us — request one through Apple's "Report a Problem" page. We can't issue a refund for a charge Apple made, though if something has gone wrong we'd still like to hear about it.
If you subscribed on our website, cancel from Settings → Subscription inside the app, or email hello@stroki.ai and we'll do it for you. Our full refund terms for those purchases, including the 30-day window, are on the Refunds & Cancellation page. It forms part of these terms.
Nothing here limits any refund or cancellation rights you have under the consumer law where you live.
Deleting your account
You can delete your Stroki account from inside the app. Deletion is immediate and permanent, and it ends your access to anything tied to the account.
Cancel any active subscription before deleting your account. We block deletion while a subscription is live, so that you don't end up paying for an account that no longer exists. Deleting the account is not itself a cancellation, and it does not trigger a refund.
Speech models and third-party components
Stroki downloads open speech-recognition models to your device the first time you select an engine. Those models are provided by their respective authors under their own licences, and are used locally on your hardware. Stroki includes other open-source components under their respective licences.
Those components and the models Stroki downloads are credited on our open source licences page, for Mac and for iPhone.
Some features depend on the capabilities of your device and your version of macOS or iOS — AI recap summaries, for instance, require a device and OS that support Apple Intelligence. Hardware and OS requirements are stated on the site and in the App Store listing, and can change as the app evolves.
Changes to the app
We add, change, and occasionally remove features. Pro subscribers get new Pro features as they ship, at no extra cost, for as long as their subscription is active.
If we ever remove a significant feature you're paying for, we'll tell you, and you can cancel and request a pro-rated refund of the unused portion of your term. For App Store purchases, that refund has to come from Apple.
Suspension and termination
You can stop using Stroki whenever you like — cancel your subscription and delete the app.
We may suspend or terminate access if you materially breach these terms, most obviously by pirating Pro, abusing the service, or using Stroki unlawfully. Where the circumstances allow it, we'll contact you first. If we terminate your account without cause, we'll refund the unused portion of your subscription.
Warranty disclaimer
Stroki is provided "as is". Speech recognition is probabilistic, and no dictation system is perfectly accurate — errors, omissions, and misheard words happen, including in ways that change meaning. Do not rely on Stroki as the sole record of anything where accuracy is critical without reviewing the output yourself.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We don't warrant that Stroki will be uninterrupted, error-free, or compatible with every configuration.
Some jurisdictions don't allow certain disclaimers, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Nous Labs is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, lost revenue, or lost or inaccurate data, arising from your use of Stroki.
Our total liability for any claim relating to Stroki is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim arose.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by negligence.
Privacy
Our Privacy page describes exactly what we collect, which is very little, and how to switch off the part that is optional. It forms part of these terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of New York, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in New York, and both sides consent to the jurisdiction of those courts.
This does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory consumer law of the country you live in.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as Stroki changes. When we do, we'll revise the date at the top of this page. If a change materially affects your rights, we'll give notice in the app or by email before it takes effect. Continuing to use Stroki after that means you accept the updated terms.
